How to Make a Pet Happy When Away on Holiday

Hi! Welcome to my new pet advice blog. This blog is all about how you can make your pet happy while you are away on holiday. Last year, I went on the vacation of a lifetime. We flew from Syndey to Vietnam. After a week in Vietnam, we flew to Italy and spent 2 weeks exploring the amazing cities there. Finally, on the way back we spent a week in New Zealand. It was the first time I had been away since buying my dog so I was super worried. However, I found a great pet boarding house and the staff did a brilliant job of looking after my pooch. I wanted to start this blog to help others who are planning to use pet day care or boarding services.

Do you think that your pet has a sixth sense? Sometimes, it seems as if they know, somehow, that you're planning to go away on your annual holiday and start to behave strangely as a consequence. You don't want to let them down and know that you have to come up with a place that they can stay when you're jetting off to the sun. If you've never been in this position before and are seriously thinking about boarding kennel alternatives, what do you need to focus on so that you make the right decision?

Ruling out Your Initial Thoughts

With a typical family holiday being up to 2 weeks in length, it is sometimes not practical to ask close friends or other members of the family to look after your pet while you're gone. Also, they may not be experienced in dealing with animals and may not have the right equipment. You may be thinking about taking your pet with you and it might well be possible. However, it's likely to put extra stress on the animal and put you under pressure as you're trying to get away from it all. Most animals do not do very well with long-distance travel and the remote destination may not be so accommodating, either.

Why Kennels Are the Best Choice

When you look at it like this, it makes a lot more sense to put the welfare of your pet in the hands of people who are fully trained and experienced in these very matters. When you choose wisely, you know that your pet is going to be welcome and looked after well and would likely get as much (or more) attention as they would if they were back at home. Remember, you may be out for long periods of time during the day at work ordinarily, so this might be an even better alternative. You don't need to be worried about health issues either, as these professionals are trained to look out for any problems.

Research Carefully

Next, you need to determine how to choose the right establishment. Ask for a recommendation, especially from other pet owners who have used these places before. Your vet will likely have a good contact who will be able to recommend boarding kennels in the local area. Do plenty of background checks well in advance, before you choose.

Almost all good kennels will be certified by the local government and inspected on a regular basis, so check that these documents are up-to-date with your prospects. You could even get in touch with the RSPCA to see if they have any feedback. Remember, bad news travels very quickly and if anything is a bit fishy, you will be able to find out if you do your research properly.

Taking a Look

Before making the final decision, call the facility and go for a visit. Your first impressions are always crucial, so be aware. Look at the indoor facilities and the outdoor exercise areas. Ask them about the food they will supply and determine whether you should bring any specifically for your pet.

Decision Time

When you are absolutely diligent and ask the right questions, you're certain to come up with a very palatable option for your furry friends. It'll give you peace of mind, as well.
